As part of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, in collaboration with the CNR-Department of Human and Social Sciences Cultural Heritage, is organising an international symposium on the painting technique of Leonardo da Vinci and his closest assistants. The conference will provide an opportunity for a direct discussion of the immense quantity of information generated by recent studies and restoration of reliably identified autograph works by Leonardo as a painter together with those by the artists of his circle.
The focus on Leonardo as a painter cannot be separated from the context in which he trained or from the one that he himself generated. Only in this way will it be possible to assess the true extent of his technical and theoretical innovations.
The experts invited to the conference, from the most important international institutions, are those who deal with Leonardo as a painter, as well as operators who have participated in the restoration of his paintings and those of the most established Leonardesque artists.
Experts from the world’s major institutions will thus be taking part, including the Musée du Louvre, the Prado, the National Gallery in London, the National Gallery in Washington, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Institute for Museums and Public Collections in Warsaw, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure and the Vatican Museums.
In addition to numerous papers, all in English, there will also be periods of discussion for an even more direct examination of the material presented.
